Having spoken to many camping enthusiasts about their attractions to travel to Broome and other neighbouring regional Queensland towns for a little more luxury camping holiday, I find that a theme of their favourite memories is trips ruined by weather. It seems that the general opinion is that camping holidays in Broome are ruined by bad weather.
So why is this the case?
Broome has a unique geography and because of this has experienced weather patterns that are not mirror images of those of other Australian towns. The place is hardly the same as other dusty outback towns, but can be rather wet and stony. Usually afternoons are spent covering the more remote tracks to see more remote attractions.
This is a place well worth exploring, but is a reality that only experienced campers really understand. I have friends who have been on a tour in Africa and still talk of the African Safari they experienced.
One of the biggest and most important elements of camping in Broome is the weather. Because it is mostly a tropical place with a very wet and humid climate, the best safari season to see African animals is in the dry winter months.
Broome has a dry winter season but you need to be prepared for the wet rainy season which can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other biting disease rife climates.
The key when camping in Broome is to be as self sufficient as possible. Water is precious so try to pack as much as possible but if you need to use water for food, make sure you decontaminate it first. Chlorine is the best chemical to use with respect to keeping unwanted insects off of you, but remember that if they rub against your skin they can still bite through your clothing.
Going Camping in Broome – Ten Top Tips to Make Your Trip Out to Dry and Happy
1. They are no fun to walk out in Broome wilderness with no water. I know I said no but they really are that dangerous. The key is to be strategically aware of your surroundings and do not get too close to the river or streams. They are still capable of bursting into flames as they are prone to do. Make sure when you are walking away from a campground that you carry water with you, even if you are not using it for drinking.
2. Chlorine is not going to help you if you are camping in Broome wilderness or stranding in the wilderness. Keep this in mind and remember that if something is not too far away from civilization, it can be a ticking time bomb.
3. I suggest that you use caution and common sense with respect to the weather. If it is supposed to rain, wear a poncho. If you are stranded in a remote location and it starts raining, put on some more clothes and socks but remain indoors and when you are able to leave the atmosphere simply enjoy yourself in your home away from home. Broome is a unique place and the weather is unlike anywhere else in Australia so you will need a portable weather alert device if you are caught in a severe storm. Do not leave your home unless you are absolutely certain that it is going to rain – stay at a camp site and sail home just in case.
4. This is crucial if you are jewelry designers, you really do have to make time to think about things like color and style while you are away but on the other hand if you are the type that needs to unwind, there is no better place than Broome.
5. Just do not pack your home keys in your knapsack. We keep our mobile phones, GPS devices, Carmax alarm clocks, beauty restoratives and other things in a very secure box that only we know exactly where it is.
6. And if you need to urinate, carry your own camp toilet as no one will supply that as part of your outdoor survival kit.
Remember, prepare yourself for all eventualities but remember also that one never knows what circumstance you will be presented with. We are all to find out together through our own experiences and the experiences that we have had ourselves.
