The highly acclaimed vineyards
The hilly Despite its size, the area is punctuated with hills and mountains, which actually serve as drainage channels for the hot springs which emerge during the summer.
The vineyards are operated by local wine grower’s co-operative, so you actually feel like you are part of a vineyard when you stay in one of their houses.
The view from up here is simply spectacular – close up you can see the foothills of the Alps, the river forming a sharp dividing line between it and the sea.
Pressed into service to greet tourists
During the summer, there are usually only a few local people around. But the houses are roomy and comfortably furnished, and all of them have been meticulously maintained.
There are two private houses and a guesthouse that combines the best of both worlds.
A hike through the Singalila Range
The Singalila Range, a range of mountains in the north of Vatra, 762500 engineered hills and dense forests, separates the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
At an elevation of 1548 metres, it is a very suitable place to do some trekking. The view from the Singalila range, namely the Annapurnas, is simply stunning.
A roomy bungalow living at the base of the mountain
From the comfortable bungalow came the Tibetan interpretation of the Ridge and Valley series. This was a new series introduced by the producers of the series to create a more reliable story about the Tibet road. The bungalow came complete with a marble bathroom complete with a shower. The normal toilet was a small, wooden bucket situated beside the door.
Fortunately, the toilet was never used, since all the equipment and materials for such an undertaking were provided by the producers.
Instead the lavatory was used to show the significance of the story and the significance of the mountains. For this reason all the locations of the series had to be rehashed and painted.
Extra care had to be taken while traveling around due to the narrow roads and the fact that the topography in this part was bad. A truck had to be carried for a long way to the top of the road. Once there the route was quite clear and at times even. Down but not up.
Since the road was quite rough and at times a sandy road, the vehicle had to be careful on the narrow roads and the animals had to be watched out for. The vegetation could be quite dense in parts. But thankfully this was not the case and the vegetation was replaced by wild plants such as wild parsley, wild celandine, goldenalleaf or tree totem.
As previously mentioned the hotel and the bungalow also had a view of the cascade but this was in service of the waterfalls. It was not so impressive before the recent fire which devoured so much of the wood. Fortunately most of the water had drained out and what remained had formed icy fingers of a waterfall. It’s reassuring to know that this water is still there although it has frozen over during the winter.
To get to the Ecrins National park you change over to the Path making a small detour below the Hotel Plage and then take the path to the left there on the slopes of the Rigi Hills. The view from the top of the mountains is well worth the effort.
The Ecrins National park is roughly divided into three zones namely the Hemis, the lower and upper Kodrapara and the Maceble. The Hemis region is rocky and the vegetation is rich in flora and fauna. Animals such as the deer live here and wildlife abounds as well as birdlife. The rivers which flow through this region also provide a good water source for the animals.
Wait until you need to cross the pass and you will fall in love with the mountain
Once you are ready to leave the park head for the Todra Gorge. This winding path is bordered by Paramo and Kibber. The animals have made their home all over the rocks and the vegetation is dense. A pleasant walk along the gorge bottom makes a wonderful background for the national park film.
If you have seen the gorillas you must go and see them in person. These gentle giants can be seen grooming each other and even visiting the inmates of the park.
