One of the most spectacular parts of living in Oregon today is the easy availability of sunshine 24-hours a day. As a result, we are lucky enough to have many wonderful camp grounds available just about anywhere we want to park our camper or van.

As a result, you won’t find many places offering the kind of scenery that Crater Lake National Park is. Named for the natural marvel that lies within its 3.2 square mile dome, Crater Lake is located just south of Olympic National Park and just across the road from Olympic’s beach. Its shimmering white beauty is due to a series of underground spring-fed cataracts where water awaits Mother Nature’s shower. Additionally, underneath the Emery Creek heads you will find more quietly flowing water which flows slowly around a base community of Olympic’s where fishing is an established industry.

Named after the river which courses through the park, Crater Lake is visible anywhere from about 60 to 100 miles away. Or, to be precise, Crater Lake can be seen wherever in the world you turn. It was once considered a navigable waterway and at one time it was the shortest river in the world. Nessie, a misspelling of Nessie, the daughter of a Scottish captain who favored the expeditions into Lake Tahoe, may have ultimately proven to be the reason why Lake Tahoe’s flows continue to cover 12 square miles to this day.

Today, Crater Lake is pummelingly beautiful which makes it all the more apt to make a great vacation spot. Those interested in boating, however, are urged to take the boat out as there are over 800 miles of shoreline. The park offers a number of options which include car camping, backcountry, and tent camping. The park does not hold a bridge. therefore, one must navigate the lake upon self-drive vacations.
