While much of Canada and the world is celebrating the bygone era of expansive Canadian families settling the expansive prairies, a selection of beautiful long forgotten British Columbia settlements are also worth a visit.

The most well known of these is probably the little oldered town of Carmanah Creek, about 50 kilometres east of Kamloops. Named after the First Nation word “Carmanah” this little town is a favourite destination for those seeking an outdoor vacation retreat. Its location on the world famous hiking trail makes it the second largest settlement in the world.

The settlement of Carmanah Creek is a story in itself. First officially recorded in 1884, it was then falls into disuse until 1917, even though the local population grew by leaps and bounds. At this time, the creek was dammed and stockade built to stop the erosion. The result was total darkness during the winter months, a condition which was remedied by the building of the little community road bridge in 1933.
